Patch Picks: Labor Day Weekend 2011
Here are some ways to recognize the working class and celebrate the "unofficial" end of summer.
What do people like most about Labor Day? Is it the long weekend, official end to summer or start to a new school year? Believe it or not, the history of Labor Day dates back to 1882 and workers had to put up a fight to acknowledge the day. Today the day is accepted, recognized and celebrated as a national holiday – and the “unofficial” end of summer.
Whether you are taking off from work or celebrating one last time before you start school, here are a few suggestions for the long weekend one last time before summer ends.

Take advantage of the while it’s still open. If the weather is sunny make a trip to the pool with your family or friends and soak in the last moments of summer. You can make a day out of it and bring along a picnic basket once you worked up an appetite.
BBQ

If the weather permits and you feel like entertaining, invite some family and friends over for an end of summer barbecue. Dig out an old family recipe or throw some burgers on the grill. The trick is to try to put in as little labor as possible!
Traditional Labor Day
Celebrate Labor Day the traditional way at Old Bethpage Village Restoration. This weekend is the Olde-Time Music Festival where people can “turn back time.” Local residents can take part in 19th century music, dance and craft fun. There will also be an old-time "base ball" game played in traditional uniforms with equipment of an earlier era.
- When: Sunday and Monday, September 4 & 5
- Hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Peruse a crafts fair on a sunny day to find all sorts of unique goods and collectibles. Vendors carry a wide array of something for almost everyone. This is the place to track down that “hard to find” gift for which you have been looking. This weekend Eisenhower Park will be hosting their annual Labor Day Outdoor Craft and Gift Fair.
- Note: The fair will be held near Field 8.
On Friday there will be arts and crafts for children at the Long Island’s Children’s Museum. On Friday at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. kids will have an opportunity to move their bodies and paintbrushes to create art inspired by artist Willem de Kooning. Also at 1 p.m. kids can take part in feathered family fun to make a birdhouse with feathers. Let the kids have their last days of fun before its back to the books.
