Patch Picks: Mother’s Day

If you're thinking about ways or places to make mother's day special, here are five possibilities.

For Mother’s Day, what moms really want is a day off. But being a mom is a 365 day job and if you want to celebrate the day and recognize someone special here are clues to a few Mother’s Day festivities.

Events:

If you’re looking to go out and stay local, visit the Lutheran Church’s Spring Fair for a large selection of gifts and goodies. There will be craft vendors selling jewelry and other accessories as well as an area for plant and gardening items. In addition, a continental breakfast and lunch will be available.

In honor of Mother’s Day, the library has been holding a series of craft-making events for children to make something personal for their mothers. Although ceramic cupcake making and suncatcher vase projects have already taken place, on Friday there will be an opportunity for kids to make their moms a memo board magnet.

Flowers & Gardening:

Although they do not recommend waiting until the last minute, it is certainly a luxury to have same-day delivery. The flowers and arrangements are different from Valentine’s Day because there are a lot of bright colored roses aside from just red and many more out of state orders placed by customers whose parents do not live close. Lilacs and tulips are among the spring specialties. Customers can choose to order in person or online.

With Mother’s Day coming up, Venezia’s Garden is a unique spot to stop and pick up the perfect something for a mom. Between now and Sunday, Joanne Venezia says she will be potting out different arrangements for customers to choose from. There will also be other ways to customize a gift with your own selection. In past years, Mother’s Day is about the perennials, roses and hanging baskets. If you aren’t fancy for flowers, there is a wide selection of fountains and statues as well as colorful gardening gifts.

Spas:

Spa 190 is recognizing that May is for Mothers and throughout the month get someone the gift of relaxation and pampering. Choose from three options along with champagne. Customers can select one of either a 60 minute flowers facial, body scrub or massage for $85. Even better, choose two of the services for $155 or all three for $225. Another option is the Floral Essence Manicure and Pedicure package for $75. Take advantage of the specials offered and call in advance to make a reservation.

Restaurants:

Although for Mother’s Day there will be a regular menu, customer favorites will be added to the specials list. In the past, branzino and rack of lamb have always been popular dishes.

Get Away:

Calling all mother’s head over to to be honored at the first national celebration of motherhood. Women will receive Mother’s Day discounts and surprises. If you get there early you may receive a “swag bag” of treats and additional discounts. There will be tables set up for women to try samples and raffles to buy.

Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum

If you are looking for something to do on Mother’s Day, the Whaling Museum is an option that ties in education and fun. Children between the ages of 5 – 12 will have the opportunity to learn about unusual “mom” creatures found in our seas. They will also get the opportunity to take part in a sensory experience being able to touch live crayfish and make their own shell pivcture frame to take home for someone special.
