Poll: Vacant Stores in Mineola

What would you like to see fill the empty shops around the neighborhood?

The extended economic slowdown has led to more “For Sale” signs and commercial vacancies in the Village of Mineola than would normally be seen during a strong economy. But even in better times, the row of commercial businesses on the East side of Roslyn Road and Second Street has, more often than not, been vacant.

The corner business, 76 Roslyn Road, which has changed names many times over the years, usually served as a sandwich shop, often focusing on different ethnic foods. The most recent tenant was Brazuca, a self-serve restaurant. Snow Nail at 88 Roslyn Road was a nail salon, but has been out of business for years; at the storefront next to it was once Smile Deli, but that has been dark for years as well.

A visit to the storefronts no longer lists a real estate agency handling the properties. Above the three storefronts are residential apartments.

The vacant storefronts are in an area of some vibrancy.
Directly across the street is (formerly O’Donnell’s Pub), which recently underwent a sleek new renovation. Around the corner from the bar/restaurant on Second Street is , which is one of Mineola’s most vibrant supermarkets.

The vacancies on Roslyn Road and Second Street are on the border of the heavily industrial section of the village.

A generation ago, a barber shop once flourished in the storefront where the nail salon most recently resided. Perhaps a barber shop again could succeed in that commercial footprint?

In Monday’s Patch question, we want to hear what businesses you would like to see fill the vacancies? What stores do you think would work in that row of storefronts at the corner of Roslyn Road and Second Street?
