Harry E. Reis, Jr., 83, Korean War Veteran

Former Mineola resident passed away on Feb. 19, 2013.

Harry E. Reis, Jr., a resident of Wappingers Falls, NY since 1962, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center at the age of 83.

Reis was the son of the late Harry E. Reis, Sr. and Mildred Bissett Reis. He was born on May 20, 1929 in Mineola, NY and married Rosemarie Maffucci on June 20, 1953; Mrs. Reis survives at home in Wappingers Falls.

Reis served in the United States Army during the Korean War. After he was honorably discharged, he came home to settle down and make a life for his wife and two children. He worked as vice president of Marshall & Sterling Insurance in Wappingers Falls until his retirement.

Reis was also a member of the VFW in Fishkill, a former member of the Grinnell Library Board of Directors, a board member of Fishkill Rural Cemetery and a charter member of the Southern Dutchess Exchange Club.

In addition to his wife Rosemarie, he is survived by his son, Jeffrey Reis and his companion, Christine Hamill; brother-in-law, Donald Maffucci and his wife, Carol; granddaughters, Morgan Cheryl Reis and Kendall Marie Reis; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Cheryl Ann Reis in June of 1986.

A wake was held on Friday, Feb. 22, 2013 at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home in Wappingers Falls, NY 12590.

A funeral service was held on Saturday, Feb. 23 at St. Mary Mother of the Church, Jackson Street, Fishkill; Monsignor Martin will preside. Interment with military honors followed in the family plot at Fishkill Rural Cemetery, Route 9 in Fishkill.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Reis’s name to the Cheryl Ann Reis Memorial Fund c/o Community Foundation, 80 Washington St. #201, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 or www.communityfoundationdc.org.

An article in the WillistonRead More Times dated Friday May 24, 2013 states: "The Herricks Board of Education is hopeful that a bill drafted by state Sen. Jack Martins(R-Min) to financially penalize landlords who create illegal apartments will stop the practice in the Hericks school district. The bill in it's current form would empower the school district or a municipality in a school district to bring legal action against a landlord who creates an "unapproved conversion" of a single family or two family house to recoup the expense of educating children in those living situations in district shools." And if you don't think the same is happening in the Mineola School District I don't know what to say other than it's your tax money.
