Joseph J. Hanson, 92, Bronze Star Recipient

Former Mineola resident passed away at the age of 92.

Joseph J. Hanson, passed away recently at the age of 92.

He was born on March 28, 1921 in Brooklyn, NY the fourteenth and youngest child of Nils and Elizabeth Hanson.

He was the beloved husband of Gertrude; father of Billy (Patty), Gerry (Dianne) and Anne Lupo (Ernest); grandfather of seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; uncle of many nieces and nephews.

He raised his family in Mineola and resided there for over 35 years before retiring to Port Charlotte, FL and returned to Franklin Square, NY.

He was a longtime member of Teamster’s Union 807 and a former employee of Nassau BOCES.

In 1944, Staff Sergeant “J.J.” Hanson landed on Omaha Beach under enemy fire and served with the Army Air Force’s 368th Fighter Group as a Crew Chief. He participated in the liberation of Buchenwald Death Camp as well as the Battle of the Bulge earning the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

A wake was held on March 13 at Barnes Sorrentino Funeral Capel, 539 Hempstead Ave. in West Hempstead. A Funeral mass will be held on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Church Chapel.
