Discussing Sandy Relief & Recovery on Barrier Island

Congresswoman McCarthy visits barrier island fire departments.

I recently visited two Nassau County barrier island fire departments – Long Beach and Point Lookout-Lido – to hear about needs and give an update during the ongoing relief and recovery efforts following Superstorm Sandy.

As someone who fought for the full federal funding of an Army Corps of Engineers project to protect the barrier island communities and the rest of Nassau County, I am glad to report that the Obama Administration had agreed to the assistance.

Our barrier island was devastated by Sandy, remains incredibly vulnerable and is the first line of defense when it comes to protecting Nassau County from major storm surges. I’m working to convince my colleagues in Congress from around the country that protecting our barrier island communities can also protect the rest of Nassau County and precious natural areas critical to the nation’s economy and environment.
