Crimes Nearby: More Prostitution Arrests, Cocaine and Burglaries

A look at crimes in the towns surrounding Mineola.

The following arrest information was supplied by several local police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate convictions.

Garden City Park
A total of seven people were hospitalized with carbon monoxide-related symptoms on Tuesday afternoon due to a generator in the basement of a Dominican-style restaurant/ apartment building on Jericho Turnpike.

A gas leak was reported in front of 2450 Jericho Turnpike at the curb on April 26 at 10:16 a.m. Garden City Park fire companies responded to the scene and Jericho Turnpike was closed off by police. National Grid was requested to the scene.

Roslyn Heights
A fire occurred at 105 Browers Lane in a private dwelling on April 27 at 4:24 a.m. It was contained at 4:43 a.m.

Carle Place
Narcotics/Vice Squad detectives made two arrests for possession of cocaine and prostitution on Saturday, April 20 at 10:55 p.m. According to detectives, Janina Mendez, 21, and Gina Miranda, 21, both of Providence, RI, while in a motel in Carle Place, offered to perform a sexual act on an undercover detective for an agreed upon amount of money. During a search incidental to arrest, Mendez was found to be in possession of cocaine. Both defendants are being charged with prostitution. Mendez is additionally being charged with fourth degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. They were arraigned on Sunday, April 21 in First District Court in Hempstead.

Westbury
Crime Stoppers and the Nassau County Police Department are seeking the public’s help in identifying a subject in connection with a grand larceny which occurred in Westbury on March 7 at about 2:20 p.m. when a suspect was present at Westbury Jewelry located at 1083 Old Country Road. While present in the store the subject did steal a Rolex watch valued at $25,000 - $30,000. The subject fled the scene in an unknown direction. Two men were arrested and charged for a Burglary that occurred on Monday, April 22, 2013 at 2:20 p.m. in Westbury. According to detectives, the two victims, a male 56 and female 54 years of age, returned to their apartment on Merillon Avenue to discover the defendant Kristopher Kaufman, 33, in the rear yard and defendant Andrew Sciascia, 24, of Hicksville inside the apartment. Both defendants fled on foot without any proceeds. The victims called Kaufman, who is an acquaintance and asked him to return back to the house. Upon his return he was placed under arrest. Sciascia was located a short time later at his residence where he was placed under arrest without incident. Both defendants are charged with Burglary 2nd degree and will be arraigned on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at First District Court in Hempstead.

Hicksville
Police arrested Celso A. Santos, 39, for  an alleged assault that occurred on Friday, April 19 at 5:50 p.m. in Hicksville. According to detectives, a 31 year old male victim was seated at a table inside the Broadway Deli, 21 Broadway, when a male subject approached him from behind and struck the victim in the face with a glass bottle.  The subject then fled the store on foot. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his non-life threatening injuries. Santos is being charged with second degree assault and was arraigned on Saturday, April 20 at First District Court, Hempstead.

Two homeless men were charged with a grand larceny that occurred on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at 3:32 a.m. in Hicksville. According to detectives, on Sunday, April 21 at 10:50 p.m., James H. Froelich, 52, entered the fenced in area of Traditional Air Conditioning Systems located at 32 East Carl Street and removed two copper refrigerator coils, handing them to Paul C. Anspake, 48, who was waiting outside the gate. The defendants fled on foot in an unknown direction. On Tuesday, April 23, at 3:32 a.m. they were located at 180 West Old Country Road and placed under arrest without incident. Both men are charged with fourth degree grand larceny. Additionally Froelich is charged with third degree criminal trespass. Further investigation discovered Anspake had an open Nassau County bench warrant for alcoholic beverage. They were arraigned on Wednesday, April 24 at First District Court in Hempstead.

Bethpage
A fire occurred in a two-story private dwelling at 33 Cambridge Ave. on April 22 at 2:13 a.m.

Floral Park
A robbery occurred on Thursday, April 25 at 7:45 p.m. where according to detectives, a 29 year old female victim was walking on Raff Avenue in the vicinity of Ash Street when she was approached from behind by an unknown male black subject. The subject grabbed a cell phone and ear buds the victim had in her hands and entered a champagne-colored Toyota with dark colored windows. The vehicle then fled the scene southbound on Raff Avenue. The subject is further described as approximately 18 to 22 years of age, dark complexion, wearing black jeans and blue hooded sweatshirt. No injuries were reported. Detectives request anyone with information regarding this crime to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.

Garden City
A 12-year-old youth was struck by a vehicle on Washington Avenue on April 20. The youth suffered a serious leg injury requiring a transport via ambulance to Winthrop-University Hospital. Witnesses observed the vehicle leave the scene without stopping and assisted the officers in locating the vehicle nearby. The driver, a male 29-year-old from Roosevelt was arrested for felony leaving the scene of an accident and unlicensed operation.

Garden City detectives arrested a female 39-year-old from Garden City on April 21 for giving a false written statement to report a crime. The subject had reported that someone entered her residence and stole jewelry, luggage and electronics valued at more than $38,100. The subject was charged after it was determined that the incident did not occur and the property was accounted for.

West Hempstead
Nassau County Police arrested a 46-year-old Queens woman on April 26 after she allegedly performed a massage without a license on an undercover detective.
