Crimes Nearby: Prostitution, Burglaries and Assault

A look at crimes in the towns surrounding Mineola.

The following arrest information was supplied by several local police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate convictions.

Carle Place

Clen Cove Road was closed in both directions between Jericho Turnpike and Hillside Avenue due to a gas leak on July 16 at 10:02 a.m. It was reopened at 10:31 a.m.

Westbury

A Hempstead man was arrested on Monday, June 15 at 11:15 a.m. in Westbury for burglary. According to detectives, a burglary investigation was conducted by detectives from the Third Squad and the First Squad. The investigation led the detectives to the defendant Michael Matthews, 53, through a positive DNA match from one location. On Monday, July 15 at 11:15 a.m., Matthews was located by Third Squad detectives and Third Precinct plain clothes officers on Corporate Drive in Westbury. He was placed under arrest without incident.
He is charged with the following burglaries:

  • Sunday, June 2, at 4:54 a.m., Matthews allegedly broke the front glass door of Tuxedo Park, located at 104 Westbury Ave., Carle Place. He removed an undetermined amount of money from the register
  • Wednesday, June 12, he reportedly broke the front glass door of LL Dent restaurant located at 221 Old Country Road, Carle Place and removed an unknown amount of money from the register.
  • Wednesday, June 12, he allegedly entered Ocean Golden Nail, located at 140 Glen Cove Road, Carle Place. He was unable to gain access to the register and fled without any proceeds.
  • Thursday, June 27, he allegedly entered the Elite card and Gift shop, located at 1925 Front Street, East Meadow and removed an undetermined amount of money from the register.
Matthews is charged with four counts of third degree burglary, second degree criminal mischief and third degree criminal mischief. He was arraigned on Tuesday, July 16, at First District Court in Hempstead.

Old Country Road was closed in both directions between Tennyson Road and Salisbury Park Drive due to an overturned vehicle on July 16 at 5:28 p.m.

Police responded to an accident in the westbound side of the Northern State Parkway at 12:09 p.m. on July 20. Multiple persons were aided.

Old Westbury

A gas line was struck by contractors at Hillside Avenue and Glen Cove Road on July 16 at 9:16 a.m. Westbury Fire Department officials responded to the scene and requested National Grid to the location.

Hicksville

The southbound side of Route 107 was closed at Route 106 after being closed due to an auto accident on July 16 at 9:26 p.m. It was reopened 10:19 p.m.

Bethpage

Hicksville Road was closed northbound at Hempstead Turnpike due to a car accident on July 16 at 7:09 a.m.

Franklin Square

Between 12:30 a.m. on July 4 and 3:30 a.m. on July 5, landscaping equipment was stolen from a locked shed in the parking lot of the Franklin Square Public Library located on Lincoln Road.

Garden City

On July 10 during an investigation in Parking Field 2S, Garden City detectives arrested a female 31-year-old from Hempstead for prostitution and a male 46-year-old from North Merrick for patronizing a prostitute.

On July 16 during a domestic incident investigation, a male 23-year-old was arrested for assaulting another family member. The subject resisted arrest causing one officer to receive a knee injury requiring transport to a local hospital.

West Hempstead

Between 10 p.m. on July 5 and 8 a.m. on on July 6, an unknown suspect(s) stole an XM radio received from the complainant's vehicle on Washington Avenue in West Hempstead. No damage to the vehicle was reported.

Between 12 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. on on July 6, a complainant discovered the convertible top of their vehicle had been cut by unknown suspect(s) at the corner of Cedar Street and Hempstead Gardens Drive in West Hempstead.
