Downed Live Wires Trap Mineola Firefighters

Volunteers rescued Friday after storm knocks power lines across fire engine.

The Village of Mineola suffered several downed power lines at the hands of a tremendous storm that plowed through Long Island Friday afternoon, causing several reported outages and trapping four members of the inside their fire engine for about 90 minutes.

The power lines came down about 3:36 p.m. Friday at 180 Horton Highway and fell across the front bumper of Engine No. 3, forcing the firefighters to remain inside the vehicle.

A call was placed to LIPA for assistance and Chieff Joseph Pratt had requested that the power grid be secured due to an extended wait time for LIPA crew, but the request was denied.
