Chaminade Grads May Fight Over State Senate Seat in Fall

Democrat Ryan Cronin looks to defeat incumbent Kemp Hannon in NY 6th Senate District.

A couple of alumni may be campaigning against each other this fall over the right to sit in the New York Senate.

According to the , Democrat Ryan Cronin said he's raised more than $50,000 for his campaign to unseat incumbent state in November.

Cronin said he's running for the position because it's time for “new, accountable leadership.”

Cronin, who said he grew up in the neighborhoods of West Hempstead, Hempstead and Garden City, graduated Chaminade as a member of the class of 1998 and later Loyola College, where he studied political science and economics. He later graduated Washington University in St. Louis School of Law and is currently a practicing attorney who often represents victims of financial frauds, including families victimized by Bernard Madoff’s Ponzi scheme.

“I am running because my community needs a state senator who is focused on reducing the property tax burden, facilitating job creation and tackling government waste,” Cronin said. “I am running for the state Senate because I want to ensure that Long Island remains a great place to raise a family, to work and to do business.”

Hannon, who is a member of the class of 1963, also lives in Garden City with his wife and twin daughters, has served the 6th senatorial district since 1989 and is also an attorney in private practice with the Uniondale-based law firm of Farrell Fritz, PC.

The Boston College and Fordham Law School graduate is chair of the Senate Health Committee and secretary of the Senate Conference.
