Emory Road Park to Gain New Playground

Pocket park to gain new amenities, security features.

Mineola residents north of Jericho Turnpike will soon have a revitalized pocket park on Emory Road to enjoy after the village board approved several pieces of playground equipment for the village youth to use at the location.

At the village board’s regular meeting on June 5 at the village hall, the following pieces of equipment at the prices listed were approved to be ordered:

  • Landscape Structures Playbooster Climbing System ($26,460)
  • Landscape Structures Double Bay Swing Set ($2,500 plus $1,200 for freight delivery of both items)
  • Installation of both structures by an authorized Landscape Structures Playbooster contractor, including installation of the Fibar safety surface for a total $16,573 from Louis Barbato Landscaping.
  • The total cost of the project is $30,160 and will be paid out of the unreserved fund balance

The playground system is designed for 5-12 year olds and includes slides and climbing equipment. The swing set includes four swings for older children and two “bucket seats” for younger children.

The equipment and safety surface is the same as that exists at Wilson Park. The steel posts of the equipment will also be set in concrete for safety purposes. The project also calls for brick paved walkways and fencing around each of the units, landscaping, security lighting, benches, according to superintendent of public works Tom Rini.

Mayor Scott Strauss said that he held a community forum in that section of the village the prior Monday night “and it was well received, there were some comments about the kids that hang out in the park, but they were absolutely receptive of the playground so the community’s on board with it.”
