North Hempstead Day

Honor North Hempstead's historical importance to our nation with special celebrations marking the 100 th anniversary of our seat of government.

During the celebration, local school students will take part in a parade and serve as Town Board Members at a mock Town Board meeting. There will be other historical activities and games and visitors will be treated to musical performances by a three-piece fife and drum ensemble as well as they folk group Stout.

On September 23, 1775, a group of patriots living in the northern section of the Town gathered in Cow Neck—modern day Port Washington—and declared their allegiance to the revolutionary cause by formerly seceding from the Town of Hempstead, which was heavily populated by Loyalists to England. This act of secession makes the Town of North Hempstead one of the first areas to have declared independence in the 13 colonies.
