Homeowners Advised of Lead Paint Removal Funds

Mineola homeowners can take advantage of free funds to remove lead paint.

Mineola residents who may have lead paint in their homes are being urged to take advantage of a new program offered by Nassau County to remove the hazardous material.

Village Clerk Joseph Scalero reported during Wednesday night’s meeting of the that Nassau County has secured “several million dollars” for lead paint abatement through its community development department.

According to a flyer the total money for the program is $5.3 million. Approximately , $1 million in a community development block grant, and $300,000 in HOME Investment Partnership Program funds.

The county is making the funds available to residents whose homes were built prior to 1978 with the goal of removing lead paint from 170 homes.

“Mineola is an older community and has many (older) homes – one of the nice features is that we have nice older homes,” Scalero said, “(but) some of them may contain lead, if they have not already dealt with that lead paint.”

Residents may call 516-572-1915 in order to speak with a specialist who deals with lead paint removal who will assist with a preliminary evaluation to see if their home is eligible to receive the funds.
