Mineola Mayor's Message: Graffiti Update, Clerk Appointment and Events

Mayor Scott Strauss offers congratulations to the village clerk on new appointment.

The following are the opening remarks of Mineola Mayor Scott Strauss made during the public meeting of the  on March 7, 2012:

Good evening. The first thing is that there has been progress by the police department in reference to tracking down the individuals responsible for the . But again I request that if you know anything at all, if you see anything at all, please continue to call the police hotline, they have some tips and they’re working through those daily. That number is 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.

On a much different note, our village clerk Joe Scalero has been appointed to the Town of North Hempstead Temporary Redistricting Committee. Congratulations, Joe. Joe’s appointed to the committee by councilman Angelo Ferrara, who represents Mineola and the Willistons, New Hyde Park, Garden City Park and other parts of the community. He was appointed as a resident of the town’s third council district, not because he’s village clerk.

Councilman Ferrara appointed Joe based on his prior service during the county’s last redistricting and his experience with federal redistricting. He also knows and respects Joe’s reputation as we all do as being fair and nonpartisan in his varied roles and double in service; appreciate it. This was not a position he sought out, but when he was approached by councilman Ferrara, he made his acceptance of his appointment conditional on the support of the village board, which I’m sure – I can speak for everybody – that he has. The appointments are unpaid, he receives no compensation for them and does not present any conflict of interest to the village in any other business that we do.

While it’s an honor for Joe personally and professionally, it also benefits Mineola by ensuring that we are well represented when the future of town government is being determined, since our village is often impacted by town decisions. We support him and congratulate you Joe, thank you with the best of luck.

Last week I attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the  located at 153 Jericho Turnpike, I wish them great success and I welcome them to the Village of Mineola. Friday I attended the  Bingo night and there were prizes, food and a lot of fun as trustee (Paul) Cusato can attest to; we all had a great, great time and principal Molloy and her staff did a tremendous job in putting it all together.

This past Sunday, we had a hugely . This was the first time the parade was held in Mineola, the streets were lined with families watching and cheering the participants. I want to extend my thanks and my congratulations to the , to the parade committee, the auxiliary police who did an outstanding job and to all those involved in helping make this a memorable event.

Lastly, this Sunday the Mineola Junior will be hosting their at the  beginning at noon and lasting until five o’clock in the afternoon. This is a great event attended by several hundreds of people throughout the day. Please come down with your family, your friends and your neighbors for a great Italian meal and to show your support for this amazing youth organization. Hopefully we’ll see you all there.

There have been some mailings going out from East Coast Gas Company. They’re the only ones that are endorsed by the Nassau County Village Officials Association. It’s not anything that we are attached to in respect to giving you any kind of insight on whether you should sign up or subscribe to their service or stay with National Grid; that’s strictly an independent decision that you must make on your own. So if you get mailings from the East Coast Gas Company, that’s the only company that’s endorsed by the NCVOA and no others are.

is the Mayor of Mineola. He was first elected in 2011 and is also a member and ex-Chief of the Mineola Fire Department.
