Mineola Village Board Notebook: August 7

Other news from the August 7 village board meeting.

The Mineola Village Board of Trustees held a meeting on Wednesday, August 7. Here are some of the things you may have missed.

Village Hall Generator

  • The board will be seeking an engineering proposal from Dvirka & Bartilucci as well as a public bid for the installation of an emergency generator at the village hall and community center.
  • According to superintendent of public works Tom Rini, the total project will cost and estimated $350,000.
  • Engineering services which include design and inspection will not exceed $37,000.
  • Funding for the project will come from the developmental incentive bonus funds received from the Winthrop and Winston construction projects and money may also come from the community development agency.
  • Mayor Scott Strauss has mentioned the addition of a generator several times over his term as when power is lost “we are completely down” at the village hall.

Personnel

  • Steven Collins was approved as a new member of the Mineola Fire Department Company No. 3.
  • Mineola resident Marco Olivera was approved as a new village parking enforcement official at a part-time salary of $14 per hour not to exceed 19 hours per week.
  • The 2012-13 library budget was adjusted for increased expenditures in a personal services professional account. Both the Library Personal Services Professional and Library Appropriated Find Balance totals read $17,979.99. According to village treasurer Giacomo Ciccone, the reason for it was more employees took advantage of a buyout which was offered in the collective bargaining agreement.

The financial reports for the village for the month of July 2013 are as follows:

  • 46 residential permits issued for $12,774
  • 19 commercial permits for $3,268
  • three board of zoning appeals appearance for $3,100
  • 31 plumbing permits for $6,000
  • 17 electrical permits for $1,950
  • 20 title searches for $2,034.25
  • six licenses for new businesses for $1,205
  • for a subtotal of $31,766.25.
  • There were court dispositions in the amount of $430 for a grand total of $32,196.25.
  • There were three notices of violation issued and 51 summonses.

  • The Mineola High School Homecoming Parade will take place on Saturday, September 21 at 12 p.m. (assembly at 11:30 a.m.) along the following route: east along Jericho Turnpike to Roslyn Road, south along Roslyn Road to Westbury Avenue, east along Westbury Avenue to Union Avenue, south along Union Avenue to Hampton Stadium. This is the same route as in prior years.
  • Mineola Lodge No. 985 of the Free and Accepted Masons requested the use of the Wilson Park picnic area for their annual family picnic on Sunday, September 1 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • The Mineola Chamber of Commerce was granted use of the community center auditorium for street fair performance auditions on Thursday, August 6 and Tuesday, August 13 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Mineola Bicycle and the Kiwanis Club of County Seat requested the closure of Beebe Road from Jericho Turnpike south to Jackson Avenue and for use of parking field No. 9 on Sunday, September 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for their Fifth Annual Bicycle Safety Day. The original date of May 19 was rained out.

Other Board News

  • The board granted permission for village clerk Joseph Scalero to attend the NYCOM Fall Training School for City and Village Officials from September 9-13.
  • The board rejected a bid dated Aug. 1, 2013 for the refurbishment of the handicapped accessible bathroom at the Irish American Center due to their only being one bidder on the project. The project will be rebid.
  • A series of fiscal year 2012-13 budget transfers within the general fund and water fund were conducted.
  • The board authorized the installation of handicapped reserved parking spaces in front of 381 DeMott St. and 104 Raff Ave. The board authorized the removal of handicapped reserved parking spaces in front of 208 Andrews Road and 213 McKinley Parkway.
