Mineola Village Board Notebook: May 15

The Mineola Village Board of Trustees held a meeting on Wednesday, May 8. Here are some of the things you may have missed.

Use Requests

• The Mineola Leisure Club requested use of the community center auditorium on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and a general purpose room for line dancing instructions from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. from Sept. 10, 2013 to June 10, 2014.
• The Mineola Leisure Club requested use of a community center general purpose room for a board meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 6 at 10:30 a.m. and a general purpose room for new member registration on Tuesday, Aug. 27 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

• The board approved a permit request from Manuel Carvalho and Churrasqueira Restaurant for the use of Banbury Road between Willis Avenue and Mineola Boulevard for the outdoor Portuguese Cultural Festival on Saturday, June 15 from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday, June 16 from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
• In 2012 the event was a one-day festival.
• Each resident of Banbury Road has reportedly signed a letter consenting to the use of the road.

• The board approved the hiring of the 2013 seasonal personnel for pool and summer camps.
• Superintendent of public works Tom Rini reported that the village still has a number of open positions for which they are interviewing adding that he would return before the board in June for the remaining positions.

• The security contract for the 2013 summer season for the pool and Wilson Park were awarded to Global Security associates at $23.50 per hour. A total of three proposals were solicited according to Rini with only two returning bids in a timely manner.
• The village will conduct a bid for the 2013 roadway improvements requirements contract. The cost is $6,490 from the engineering firm of Dvirka & Bartilucci. “This will be able to get the ball rolling to start to take a look at what roads we can do this year, put together plans, specifications and then go out to bid, Rini said.
• The village will also hold a public bid on the handicapped accessibility improvements to the Wilson Park Concession Stand. All preliminary design has been completed, which Rini said was the cause of the delay in terms of fire protection and making sure electrical and water supplies were adequate.

• The Mineola Fire Department is in its final stages of its annual fundraiser. Volunteers will be wearing their uniformed shirts and hats during the drive and will not solicit over the telephone.
• The Mineola Athletic Association Fun Day will be held on June 1 at 3:30 p.m. at the little league fields. The playoffs for the majors division begin on May 23 and the minors playoffs begin June 9.
