Other news from the Nov. 2 village board meeting.

The Mineola  held a meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 2. Here are some of the things you may have missed.

Clothing Drop Boxes

  • Village building superintendent Dan Whalen said there is a “proliferation” of clothing drop boxes around the village, with crews having removing about 90-95 percent of them.
  • “Some of the organizations that have them out there have absolutely nothing to do with charity, some of them are clearly for profit,” he said. “Unless you’re sure about where you’re sending these items, I suggest you stay away from them.”
  • There are about three or four drop boxes left on commercial properties he estimated, and asked residents to call the village if they see any more bins.

  • There will be a hearing on December 14 for a law pertaining to the village planning board. The planning board had not been previously a part of the village law books.
  • The board will also discuss the 2 percent property tax cap at the meeting, specifically looking to institute a law that allows the board to override the cap if a supermajority of the board votes in the affirmative. “We’re going to look to institute it here to protect us should our numbers be higher than we want them to be,” said.

Building Department

  • The financial reports for the village for the month of October is as follows: 27 residential permits issued for $8,105; nine commercial permits for $1,560; three applications for the board of zoning appeals for $1,350; one rental registration for $325; 19 plumbing permits for $3,325; 13 electrical permits for $900; 10 title searches for $1,350; 32 certificates of occupancy for $800; two copies of the village code for $3.50; three licenses for new businesses for  $805; for a subtotal of $18,523.50. There were court dispositions in the amount of $1,300 for a grand total of $19,823.50.

  • The board approved a request by the Mineola Police Activity League (PAL) to use the community center auditorium from 6:15 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays from Jan. 5, 2012 to April 5, 2012 to conduct its winter lacrosse program.
  • A request to remove a handicapped parking space in front of 9 Colonial Ave. was approved. The reason for the change is that a new owner has purchased the home.
  • The village filled a position in the highway department, hiring Gabrielle Fernandes, a Westbury resident. An open supervisory position in the water and sewer department will also be advertised.
  • The responded to 56 calls during the month of October, bringing the total number of calls responded to up to 400 since April 1.
  • Trustee George Durham, Mayor Strauss, Nassau County , R-New Hyde Park, and representatives from North Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman’s office attended the Carle Place Civic Association meeting on October 26 to give residents an update on the Bruce Terrace flooding mitigation project.
