Nassau Legislature Honors Fire Marshal for Saving Young Life

Off-duty officer saved life of young soccer player in upstate New York.

The Nassau County Legislature honored Fire Marshal Richard Lerner during its monthly meeting Monday at the in Mineola.

Lerner received the citation for his role in saving the life of a young boy while coaching his son’s soccer game in upstate New York.

Off duty at the time, Lerner used his EMT skills to aide an injured player on the opposing team who suffered neck and spine injuries and was incapable of movement.

Lerner applied traction to the boys neck and “his actions further prevented any permanent paralysis,” Legislative Majority Leader Peter Schmitt, R-Massapequa, said. “We thank Mr. Lerner for going above and beyond the call of duty.”

Before being presented with the legislative citation, Lerner gave a simple “thank you” to the 19 member body.
