Water Bill Telephone Scam Reported Around Mineola

Village residents advised to use caution if contacted by phone.

Several communities neighboring Mineola served by water districts have reported a recent rise in telephone scams targeting water customers.

Although no Mineola residents have reported such calls, is advising residents to exercise caution if they receive a telephone call purporting to be from the Village of Mineola or its water department.

According to a release from the village, telephone scam artists are calling water customers alerting them that their water bill payment has not been received and is overdue. Scammers further state that in order to bring the account current, the resident is urged to provide the caller with credit card information in order to make an immediate payment. The fake caller may even suggest that this will prevent a service interruption, i.e., cutting off water supply.
