Chaminade Teams Take Top Two Spaces at 2013 LI Envirothon

Top team of five Flyers move on to New York State Envirothon on May 30-31.

Two five-member teams of students from Chaminade High School placed first and second in the 2013 Long Island Envirothon, which was held on April 30 at Old Bethpage Village Restoration in Old Bethpage, NY.

The Long Island Envirothon is part of the North American Envirothon competition, which is sponsored by Canon U.S.A. Participating students learn about their natural surroundings as well as environmental conservation and sustainable development.

Both the Nassau and Suffolk County Soil & Water Conservation Districts coordinate the Long Island Envirothon in collaboration with the United States Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

This year's competition was focused on “Sustainable Rangeland Management.” Over 30 teams rotated between subject stations and answered in-depth questions pertaining to the topic.

Chaminade Team No. 1 is comprised of Alex Adia, Connor Doyle, John Lanka, Matt Lattime, and Dylan Tamayo.

Chaminade team No. 2 counts as its members Thomas Barsch, Liam Bradley, Richie Laga, Julian Mancini, and Connor Watson.

The students of the two top-scoring teams, one from Nassau County (Chaminade) and one from Suffolk County (Sachem), each received a $500 scholarship, and paid registration and transportation to compete in the New York State Envirothon held on May 30-31, 2013 at Morrisville State College in Morrisville, NY.
