Mineola High School Holds 2013 Career Day

Mineola juniors offered 'a passport to the future.'

Mineola High School juniors were given a passport to their future during a Career Day event. Students came dressed for success and eager to learn about possible career options.

Designed as roundtable discussions, professionals from 40 organizations, companies and institutions spoke about their careers with thestudents. Among the presenters were seven Mineola High School alumni and local businesses from the community.

This career day forum assisted students in planning for their futures, gavepresenters an opportunity to inform future participants in their fields and enabledthe guidance staff to expand their role as college and career advisers. By speakingwith professionals who are “in the trenches,” students gained knowledge they maynot have otherwise obtained from traditional career resources.

“They really told you what it was like to live the career,” said junior Joyce Rhim,who is currently taking AP Physics and considering a career in the field of math orscience. The presenters explained the connection between academic courseworkand potential careers.

They also discussed the various career options afforded byspecific technical programs and college majors. The students came away from the roundtables motivated, optimistic and focused on their postsecondary plans.
