Mineola Students Have Poems in Their Pockets

Mineola students asked to keep and share a poem in their pocket each day.

In coordination with their unit of study on poetry, Jackson Avenue Elementary School’s librarian Judy Shaughnessy kicked off a weeklong “Poem in Your Pocket” event.

All students were asked to keep and share a poem in their pocket each day throughout the week and were required to present the poem to a teacher or staff member whenever asked.

Every student in the building was asked to share their poem at least once and a prize was given to those who were “caught” with a poem. Students got creative and hid poems in their hair and shoes when a pocket was not on them, and prizes included sports posters, trading cards, books and coupons to local eateries.

“The library always tries to support what is being taught in the classrooms with appropriate activities, computer lessons and books to feature,” Ms. Shaughnessy said.

Students either selected one of their favorite poems to carry, or wrote an original on their own.
