Pumpkin Math at Hampton Street School

Mineola students use old pumpkins in math classes.

Kindergarten students at Hampton Street School in the Mineola Union Free School District recently used their old pumpkins to do some creative problem solving in class.

Broken into groups, and with the help of parent volunteers, students measured the circumference and height of large pumpkins in order to reinforce math concepts that had previously been taught.

The kids also had an opportunity to look inside the pumpkins and count how many seeds each one held. Together as a group, they filled in a worksheet and designed paper pumpkins of their own.
