Revamped High School Parking Lot to Ease Congestion

New configuration at Mineola High School to have about 65 new spaces.

Students, faculty and visitors to the will be more apt to find a parking spot when the school year begins next month following the renovations being made to the lots on the south and eastern side of the school.

At their July 27 meeting, the awarded the renovations to A & R Capital Association in the amount of $228,901. According to Superintendent Dr. Michael Nagler the bid is below the architect’s estimate for the work by about $60,000.

As part of the reconfiguration of the lot the district is removing the tennis courts, fencing and placing a new asphalt bed down and edging around the entire parking lot. The estimated 70 total spots will all be striped, numbered and there will be a center median and the area will be landscaped along with tree plantings.

With the , an additional 25 spaces will be used for staff for that grade. “So the parking problem currently at the high school should be solved,” Dr. Nagler said. “With the emphasis on should be.”

A bus loop will also be located in the south parking lot, losing about seven spots in front of the building, for a net gain of about 65. The handball wall will remain and the curb will be dropped down for students to be able to continue to play at the site. A student-painted mural may also adorn the wall.

Currently the crosswalk across Armstrong Road is blocked on the high school side with a parking space. Under the reconfiguration the crosswalk would be a dedicated walking space.
