Chaminade Hockey Falls to Fordham Prep 7-1

Flyer goalie Thomas Dorsey injures shoulder in loss.

hockey's continued on Sunday, as the Flyers took a tough 7-1 loss to Fordham Prep (Bronx, NY) at the Abe Stark Skating Arena in Coney Island. Along with the disheartening defeat, the Flyers may be without goaltender Thomas Dorsey, who injured his shoulder in the second period for the foreseeable future.

"You can't play from behind every period and you're not going to win scoring one goal," Chaminade head coach Frank Bendl said. "It's not going to happen."

The Flyers and the Rams skated at an even pace in the first period, but Chaminade edged Fordham Prep in quality scoring chances. Dorsey kept the Flyers' zone clear with confident stick handling.

Fordham Prep's Joe Nicosia scored first, putting a pass from fellow senior Joe Renza in the top right corner of the goal and gave the Rams a 1-0 lead. Fordham Prep's first goal provided some confidence and that carried over into the second period.

Renza scored his own goal at 13:18 of the second period on a pass from senior Chris Smith to make the score 2-0. During a rush in front of the net, Dorsey became tangled, injuring his shoulder. The senior goaltender had stopped 5 of 7 shots before leaving the game in pain. The injury forced junior Chris Agnone into the net for his first action of the season.

"I think with Tommy in the net we've got a closer game, he had a great first period; Chris had to come in very cold," Bendl said. "We have to be hungrier to score. Bottom line is we're not going to win games by scoring one goal."

Initially, Chaminade rallied to support Agnone on both ends of the ice. Senior forward Norman Riker scored at 6:01 of the second period to cut Fordham Prep's lead to 2-1. Seniors Dylan Scarpato and Nicholas Faclo assisted on Riker's goal, but the Flyers' rally was short-lived.

"(Fordham Prep) had that killer-instinct. They were ahead 2-1 and we had to strike again," Bendl said. "You have to build off the boost that scoring that goal gave us. You can't let it evaporate and that's what we did."

Rams senior Joe Regan scored seconds later to bring the score to 3-1 and essentially took the Flyers out of the game for good. Rams freshman Brendan May netted the puck to make the score 4-1 and exactly one minute later (2:55) Nicosia added his second goal of the game and brought the score to 5-1.

Rams senior forward Chris Smith got credit for two goals in the third period as Fordham Prep's record improved to 1-1 with their victory, while the Flyers fall to 0-2-0 in the CHSHL A Division.

"I thought we were going to come back after we scored. It felt good. We thought we had a chance to take the momentum back," Riker said. "We've got practice this week so we'll be able to work on where we messed up."

Chaminade will practice at Iceland in New Hyde Park on Tuesday before a home game at Iceworks in Syosset.
