Chaminade–Vikings Hockey Rematch Cancelled

Rink reportedly runs out of hot water for Zamboni.

In Queens they’re used to these sorts of things, used to mishaps, things going wrong. Maybe it’s just the proximity to Shea, er, Citi Field that just rubs off on the folks around here, living next to mediocrity for so long that it’s permeated every other aspect of their lives.

Still, that’s no excuse for letting something like this happen.

A rematch between the varsity hockey teams of Chaminade and St. Joseph by the Sea had to be cancelled Tuesday night when the Zamboni they use at the Flushing Rink ran out of hot water. I’ll let you re-read that and let it sink in. Done? Let’s move on.

First of all, it’s a beautiful almost-new facility. If they’re having plumbing problems, I’m sure that they could have at least called someone beforehand. Secondly, the rink managers recoated the ice twice before, holding both a free-skate and a previous game before the Flyers and Lions even got their blades on the rink. You would think that at least they would have held the free-skate off until the games were finished before they let the public on.

Needless to say, the coaching staff on both sides were livid. Ice time is expensive and hard to come by wherever you go and it’s a trek for even St. Joseph to come over the Verazzano to Queens only to get the message that you have to come back again, most likely for more punishment.
