Flyers Lacrosse Edges Fairfield Prep 7-6

With 3:19 left on the clock, Walter Rooney took a shot on Fairfield Prep goalie Mike Seelye and helped secure a 7-6 victory for Chaminade.

It was the midfielder’s second goal of the game, his sixth on the day as the Flyers continued their winning ways Tuesday afternoon.

After taking the opening face-off, Chaminade had a rocky, if uneven first quarter as the Jesuits fired the opening salvo, scoring at 11:24 before Chaminade answer back four minutes later off the stick of attacker Brendan DeTommaso.

The Flyers capitalized on a man up play and came away with ball downs in the second, scoring two in the Jesuit net, one from middies Walter Rooney and Paul Urbank to lead 4-2.

But the Jesuits, led by Coach Chris Smalkais and captained by all the seniors on the squad, refused to yield, scoring three unanswered goals late in the third to tie it at five.

“They’re a great team,” Chaminade head coach Jack Moran said of Fairfield. “They won the Catholic Federation State Title three times in the last 5 years in Connecticut.”

Playing with a man down in the fourth quarter, the Flyers gave up the lead on an illegal check penalty.

Flyer midfielder Matt Graham was able to fire back to tie it at six with 5:15 left before Rooney fired off his shot two minutes later.

“We got into a bruiser,” Moran said, praising the Flyers’ resolve. “We were lucky to stem their run after three goals, and it’s a credit to our kids that we really buckled down and were patient when we needed to be.”

The Flyers will face Kellenberg away at 10 a.m.
