Flyers Win Bowl Game Over Holy Cross 20-12

Ryan Lukacovic isn’t listed as QB on the roster of the Chaminade varsity football team. Most of the time he is in either at defensive back or running back, keeping his head down against the burly might of whatever line the Flyers happen to be going up against this season. Last season he did get his share of time in the pocket as well as prepping for a few trick plays in case of need.

“I don’t really do much, the coaches put me in position to make plays,” he said Saturday afternoon at .

The 5’10 junior had been put in on such a trick play after starting QB Joseph Anile threw a pass that was tipped late in the third and ended up in the gloves of Holy Cross DB Joshua Wallace and was returned for a touchdown.

“To do that and to bring the d-backs up and the safety up and to open that up I just had to put up a 20 yard pass,” Lukacovic said.

His arm ended up going just over three times that distance, the ball finding the hands of WR Thomas Zenker 61 yards downfield before Lukacovis punched it in the remaining 4 yards, contributing to a 20-12 Chaminade victory over the Knights in a season-ending bowl game.

Holy Cross had scored first on a 30-yard TD pass from QB Yianni Gavales to Anthony DiPasquale, with the ensuing kick going wide. Chaminade kicker Zane Wasp would make it through the uprights twice, the first coming after a 43-yard TD carry in the second from junior Matthew Correa.

Still leading 13-12 with about 90 seconds left on the clock, the Flyers made a pickoff move of their own as senior DB Sean Hanley made the move to play deep a few steps at midfield and picked off Gavales. Five plays later Chaminade RB Daniel Fowler ran it into the endzone for the 20-12 lead.

“Probably the interception,” Flyers head coach Stephen Boyd said when asked which was more important, “because that was the next play.”

“I just read the quarterback and he threw it right up there and it was a nice loft right to me,” Hanley said. “We were flat the first half a little bit, our seniors really took control of the game and we just said ‘this is our last game together, we’ve got to bring it out and just play hard’.”
