Lady Mustangs Prep for Season Opener with Scrimmage

Mineola looks to tidy up before season opener against Valley Stream South.

The Lady Mustangs will begin their 2010-2011 basketball season Wednesday, but geared up on the hardwood Saturday with a six-period scrimmage against Glen Cove at . The girls kept their energy and focus on scoring, winning four out of the six periods.

"We started off a little slow, but then we got stronger toward the end." Senior Kalie Medlock said of the team's performance at the game.

Senior Heather Gessner, who scored over ten points over the duration of the game, noted the team's need to tighten up their strategies. "We were kinda sloppy," she admitted. "We really need to work on some of our plays."

Coach Denise Zunno is positive about her team's ability to do well this season. "I think as they continue to grow as a team, they can be in contention for first place in the conference," she said. "But they still need work. Always need work. Even the strongest player needs work."

After winning their conference last year, the Lady Mustangs have high expectations to shoulder for the 2010-11 season. If the scrimmage is any indication of what is to come, the Lady 'Stangs have a great chance of repeating as conference champions.
