Locust Valley Edges Mineola Boys Lacrosse

Mustangs fall 9-8 in closing seconds against Falcons.

Tied at eight with 35 seconds left, the Mineola boys varsity lacrosse team was in a huddle on the sidelines of last Wednesday. The skies were just about ready to open up, sending the few spectators running for cover. Inside the circle head coach Matt Antonio was busy trying to impart how to make a game-winning shot.

The Mustangs never got a chance to make it.

Called for offsides 15 seconds after the breakup, Locust Valley was handed the ball, getting a shot past Matthew Moro with 10 seconds left on the clock, cinching a 9-8 victory.

Still, Antonio chose to accentuate the positives in the match. “We really improved on ground balls since ,” he said. “You really need to do everything right against these good teams.”

The right things included scooping up ground balls and chasing down missed shots in the first half, but allowed the Falcons to tie it twice and net three unanswered goals headed into the lockerroom.

The Mustangs were able to net three successive scores of their own in the third only to have Locust Valley once again at their heels tying it before another offsides defensive penalty allowed the powerplay to tie it at eight.
