Mineola Boys Look to Return to Basketball Playoffs in 2011-12

The Mustangs return the majority of their roster from last year's playoff team.

The Mineola boys varsity basketball team will have a lot to offer in the 2011-12 season from their guard combinations to their big men inside. They return three of their starting guards from last year as well as two impact forwards – Matt Moro and Tom Breslin.

“We will work hard together as a team this year with the goal of returning to the playoffs,” head coach Jim Hegmann said. “We have some good guards in, (Brian) Gaffney, (Malcolm) Brown and (Mike) Waszczuk and will have some strength inside with our big men.”

Key Players:

  • Brian Gaffney, junior, guard
  • Mike Waszczuk, junior, guard
  • Malcolm Brown, junior, guard
  • Matt Moro, junior, forward
  • Tom Breslin, senior, forward

Position Breakdown:

The Mustangs will be strong at the guard position with three players –Gaffney, Waszczuk and Brown – rotating in and out. The three juniors will control the ball moving up the court and keep a good balance on the offensive side of the ball.

“Our guard play will be a strong point for us this season,” Hegmann said. “Any of our guys will have the ability to bring the ball up the floor.”

The forward position will also be a bright spot with 6’4 Matt Moro and 6’3 Tom Breslin in the mix.

Despite losing All-county player, James Bulva to graduation, “we still will be strong at forward with Moro and Breslin,” Hegmann added.

Hegmann believes that his teams weakness will be its defense and their ability to grab rebounds because of the overall lack of height on the roster.
