Mineola Girls Lacrosse Falls to Carle Place 14-8

There have been few bright spots for the Mineola girls varsity lacrosse team this season but head coach Frank Massaro said he tries to focus on the positive things.

“We’re having a tough year, there’s no doubt about it,” said Massaro, who watched his team lose their tenth straight game against Carle Place on Thursday afternoon at Mineola High School. “But we have a couple of seniors who are still playing very hard for us in their final seasons.” 

One of those seniors is Ashley Stavish who has scored multiple goals in every game this season. The assertive midfielder scored a career high six goals in the teams lone win against Wheatley back in March and has scored five goals twice including in this most recent game, a 14-8 defeat to Carle Place.

“She’s a great athlete,” said Massaro. “She knows how to get to the goal and once inside she doesn’t miss.”

Massaro also credited seniors, Julie Falotico, Courtney Capobianco and Teresa Ferreri saying they have been stellar on the offensive side of the field.

So if Mineola is getting all this offensive production from multiple players than why do they currently reside in the basement of Conference IV with a 1-10 (0-7 conference) record?

Coach Massaro attributes it to his teams lackluster defense and their overall lack of speed.

“Our biggest problem is that we are lacking speed which is something we’ve had in the past. This has been a huge factor for us this season.”

The Lady Mustangs will get one more solid chance at a conference win when they play at New Hyde Park on Wednesday. The Gladiators have also had a similarly dismal season with only one conference win under their belt.

Mineola will end their season the following Tuesday against first place East Meadow.
