Mineola Lightning Softball Starts 2013 Off 3-1

Mineola Lightning softball tied for first place in Merillon League.

The Mineola Lightning began the 2013 season on the road with a 7-2 loss to the Merillon Bolts. In the loss Lexi Cicalese had a steal of home.

In their second game vs Carle Place Lady Frogs, Emily Haller, Kaitlyn Wetzel and Sarah Carbain combined for a no-hitter in a 5-0 victory. They had a total of 14 strikeouts and one base runner in six innings pitched. At the plate Natalie Pusateri had a hit and two runs scored and Christina Crecco had a hit and a run scored.

The girls next traveled to Garden City and belted out 16 hits en route to an 18-4 victory. Emily Haller had three hits, three runs scored and four RBI, Samantha Hackenjos had four hits, including a home run, scored three runs with four RBI, Vicky DeFrancis had two runs scored and a hit, Jillian Haller had two hits and two runs scored. Miranda Bradley had three runs scored, Mia Orefice had two runs scored and a hit. Tara Orefice had three walks and two runs scored.

This last Sunday at Mineola High School the Lightning got revenge on the Bolts by giving them their first lost 7-6. The game was a back and forth match with the Lightning trailing 3-2 going into the top of the fourth when Samantha Hackenjos hit a three-run homer and Kaitlyn Wetzel scored on a single and three stolen bases to make the score 6-3. Then in the top of the sixth, the Bolts scored three runs to tie the game up.  Wetzel led off the bottom of the six with a walk and she then stole three more bases including home to win the game. The Lightning where led by strong performance at the plate by Ashley Sandoval and in the field by Caroline Muessig.
