The Mineola girls varsity soccer team played one of their toughest games of the season at Sewanhaka High School last Thursday afternoon.
Tied 1-1 for most of the game the Lady Mustangs received a late goal from senior Marisa Athan off an assist from sweeper Catie Cunningham to earn the victory.
“Sewanhaka is the second place team in our conference and was definitely the toughest team we've faced all season,” Mineola head coach Katherine Bennett said. “They guarded our girls tight and their goalie made some great saves on a couple of our shots.”
Mineola scored early in the first half off of a penalty shot by Nicole Forte. Sewanhaka (4-1-1, 5-2-1) quickly responded as Sabrina Spiridigliozzi, their leading goal scorer, netted one to tie the score at 1 each.
That would remain the score until late in the second half when Nathan was able to put one by Sewanhaka goalkeeper Daniella Ford to give Mineola the 2-1 advantage.
The Indians had a couple of opportunities late in the game to try and even the score but Mineola goalie Samantha Venus stood her ground in the net, getting 9 saves on the day.
Mineola remains 6-0 in conference play, a 7-2 record overall and has one more regular season game at home against Sewanhaka on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.1 2 F Mineola Lady Mustangs 1 1 2 Sewanhaka Lady Indians 1 0 1
