St. Joseph's Snaps Flyers Hockey Win Streak

Chaminade's playoff hopes dashed with 4-1 loss.

Saturday night, a 4-1 loss to St. Joseph’s By the Sea ended ’s varsity hockey team’s .

Playing without five key contributors – including senior goaltender Tommy Dorsey and senior Dylan Scarpato – the undermanned Flyers fought hard but have played themselves out of playoff contention. With the loss, the Flyers fall to 5-8.

“We have a lot of opportunities and it was only 3-1 until the very end of the game,” Chaminade coach Frank Bendl said. “We had a lot of opportunities right in front of the net that we couldn’t finish.”

The Vikings drew first blood when Slava Okshin blasted the puck right in front of the net. Chaminade was able to win consecutive faceoffs and beat their opponents to loose pucks better than they had in recent games, but failed to score on perfect opportunities.

Sean Dvorak finished a pass from Michael and Nick Falco and even the score at 4:09 of the second period. The Flyers out shot the Vikings 8-5, but fanned on open nets twice in the second and never had a good scoring chance again.

“As a team we played pretty well, but we have to work on finishing out chances more,” Chaminade defenseman Patrick DePippo said. “We were waiting for the puck too much, we should have gone to it more – it’s a lot of little things.”

At 2:23 into the second period Jay Francis set up Jesse Lopresti from point blank range to give the Vikings a 2-1 lead. Just over a minute later, Francis scored his own goal to give St. Joseph’s a 3-1 advantage.

The Flyers pressed forward again in the third and matched the Vikings’ six shots. Calling a timeout with 1:14 remaining, Chaminade pulled goalie Chirs Agnone – who made 14 saves in the loss – with under a minute to go, but the Flyers didn’t capitalize on their chances. Rob Silvestri added a goal on the empty-net.

“I called the timeout to talk to them about winning the faceoff,” Bendl said. “I wanted to win the faceoff and get an extra skater out. We had every chance to get back in and win here.”
