Mineola 2013 Summer Camp Guide

With a little less than four months left in the school year, local parents have already started planning for their kids’ summer vacation.

And that means one thing: Summer camp.

To help you decide, Mineola Patch has compiled this summer camp guide featuring a host of programs in town – and many others from nearby towns – to make the job of picking the one that’s right for your kids a much easier experience.

Brookville:

Name: LIU Post Youth Camps

Type of camp: variety/sports/performing arts

Cost:  Summer Day Camp: $450 - $2,360 until May 1, then $480 - $2,570; Performing Arts Academy: $1,600 till May 1, then $1,800.

Where:  LIU Post, 720 Northern Blvd, Brookville;  

When: Summer Day Camp: July 1 - Aug. 16; Performing Arts Academy: July 29 - Aug. 16

Details:  LIU Post offers a one- to eight-week summer day camp for children ages 5 - 16, with children in age-specific groups. Activities include arts and crafts, computers, cooking, dance, drama, music, nature, sports and recreation, and swimming.  The Performing Arts Academy (ages 5 - 17) is a three-week program that challengers campers to perform in a full-sized band, concert choir or become part of the Glee club.

Name: LuHi Summer Programs

Type of camp: variety/arts/sports/

Cost: Prices start at $1,095 for two-weeks, vary by program

Details:  LuHi offers 30 summer programs over eight weeks that are divided into three catagories: All-Round programs (grades pre-kindergarten - 9) for children who want a mix of traditional outdoor camp activities, sports, crafts and more; Arts & Education (grades 2 - 12) for in-depth study of computer science, dance, forensics, theatre and performing arts, and visual arts; Sports Schools (grades 1 - 12, varies by sport) for beginner to advanced athletes from a multi-sport Rookie School and baseball to fencing.

Garden City:

Name: Waldorf School of Garden City

Type of camp: variety/sports/crafts

Cost: Half-Day (age 3): $1,500  or $58 per day; Half-Day (ages 4-5): $1,900 or $75 per day; Full-Day: $2,900 or $110 per day

Where: Waldorf School of Garden City, 225 Cambridge Ave., Garden City.

Details:  Waldorf School of Garden City is a half-day and full-day summer programs for boys and girls age 3 - 13 for six weeks on their 10-acre campus. Campers are grouped primarily by age, with approximately 24 campers per group. The day program includes music, crafts, dramatic work, storytelling, games, swimming, athletics and more. Optional visits to local points of interest  are scheduled for older campers. Flexible scheduling is available but a minimum of 23 days is required.

Great Neck:

Name: Camp Parkwood

Type of camp: Recreation/sports/arts

Cost:  Camp Parkwood: $385 - $2,880 through April 1, then $425 - $3,200;  Tots:  $330 - $2,490 through April 1, then $360 - $2,730; Minis: $205 - $1,540 through April 1, then $225 - $1,700.

Details:  Camp Parkwood offers three summer day camp program for children: Camp Parkwood (grades 1 and up), Tots (ages 4 - 5); Minis (ages 3-4). Camp activities include sports, games, arts and crafts and more. Tots have twice weekly swimming instruction.

Name: Camp Gan Israel

Type of Camp:  recreation/religious

Cost:  $300 per week, or $2,400 for full eight-week session

Where: Chabad of Great Neck, 400 East Shore Road, Great Neck.

Details: Camp Gan Israel is a eight-week Jewish summer day camp program for children ages 2 - 12. Camp activities will include swimming on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, while younger children enjoy a splash or wading pool. Hot Kosher lunches and snacks are provided.

Manhasset:

Name: Science Museum of Long Island

Type of camp: science/educational

Cost:  Summer Science Experiment: $375 per week first child, $350 per week per sibling;Advanced Summer Science: $375 per week first child, $350 per week per sibling;          Long Island Raiders: $700 (requires membership), Assistant Counselor Program: $300 per week.

Details: This science education program offers weekly sessions for eight-weeks for children in nursery school through age 17. Children are divided into groups by age:

Summer Science Experience (grades nursery - 3), Advanced Summer Science (grades 4- 7), Long Island Raiders (grades 4 and up), Assistant Counselor Program (ages 14 - 17)

Long Island Raiders is a travel camp for grades 4 and up to explore Long Island with day and overnight trips. Assistant Counselors allows teens to gain hands-on experience working side-by-side with teachers and counselors.
