After losing to last year’s NSCHSAA champions - Holy Trinity - in their , the Chaminade (8-2) bowling team went on a rampage. including three straight shut-outs later and it was time for a rematch against the team that eliminated them from last season’s playoffs in resounding fashion.

Chaminade is still considered a formidable team not only because of their individual talent, but because they have a habit of picking up the slack for each other when a teammate or even a couple of teammates are in a rut.

“When they all struggled at the same time,” Flyer Coach Steven Toner said, “they didn’t have a chance against the good team we played.”

As junior Andrew Fenn led his team in game one with a 178, it was apparent the Flyers were in trouble.

To top it off, Cougar junior Kyle Durfee dropped a 224 and senior Justin Figueroa belted out a 223.

“Consistency is what we need,” Fenn said before starting game two.

Down a whopping 259 pins, Fenn and sophomore Phil Loeschinger stepped up and each delivered four strikes in the first four frames. Two strikes in between and four more in the end left Loeschinger with a big 244. Fenn’s 240 was a generous contribution and the ‘A’ team was able to clinch game two by 59 pins.

The ‘B’ team did not fare as well, losing by 67.

With the Cougars still holding a commanding lead of 267 pins going into game three, there was no way the Flyers could make a comeback.

Both teams moved their back-up players into the match and for what it was worth, the Flyer bench out-rolled their Cougar counterparts. Sophomore Matt Weiss delivered five strikes in a row starting in the fifth frame to finish with a 212 - his second highest single game score of the season.

“We just didn’t have it today and dug a hole for ourselves early,” Toner said.

With the Flyers facing a quick turnaround , it’s time to grab a shovel and start digging out. Fast.
